A Mother’s Love

“I love you” She whispered in her baby boy’s ears.
“I love you” She whispered as she watched her son sleep through the night.
“I love you” She whispered when her son learned to walk.
“I love you” She whispered while her son boarded the bus for the very first time.
“I love you” She whispered as she handed her son an ice pack for his first black eye.
“I love you” She whispered when her son packed up all of his baby toys.
“I love you” She whispered as her son played with his new friends.
“I love you” She whispered when her son started high school.
“I love you” She whispered when he was baptized.
“I love you” She whispered when her son learned to drive.
“I love you” She whispered when he came home safely after a late night.
“I love you” She whispered was she woke him up the next morning.
“I love you” She whispered when he chose his college.
“I love you” She whispered when he brought a girl home.
“I love you” She whispered when she got news of his new job.
“I love you” She whispered as they told her of their engagement.
“I love you” She whispered when he got promoted.
“I love you” She whispered while she watched the wedding.
“I love you” She whispered when she got the news of a baby soon to be born.
“I love you” She whispered while she waited with her daughter-in-law at the kitchen table.
“I love you” She whispered as the clock struck eleven.
“I love you” She whispered while they dialed 911.
“I love you” She whispered when the police called.
“I love you” She whispered as they drove to the crash.
“I love you” She whispered as she held his limp hand.
“I love you” She cried when the hospital monitor stopped beeping.
“I love you” She shouted as he was lowered into the ground.
“I love you” She whispered as she planted spring flowers above the grave.
“I love you” She whispered six months later, in her new grandson’s ear.
“I love him” She said to her daughter-in-law “He’s just like his dad.”
